Personal:

I am married and have 2 kids, they keep me smiling and definitely keep me busy. I began to have a passion for running because it keeps me healthy mentally and physically. Sometimes you just need to take a break and go for a run:) I want to push myself, I haven't had much experience with road races and I would love to get stronger and faster. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Ran outside and felt good, the wind was blowing and mentally I always struggle with that. I ran 9 min mile pace. I am hoping I can build my endurance and then be able to speed up! As I'm logging this my legs feel really tight and my hips are achy, I don't want to over do it, and get an injury. Even going slow I still feel like 7 miles is a lot, hope to break through my mental weaknesses.

Ran 7 on the treadmill because I didn't want to run in the wind. Ran about an hour and a half after eating cafe rio, I felt good the first 5 1/2 miles other than a heavy stomach, and then I got a bad side ache and could hardly breathe but finished out my run. I will remember not to run after eating! 8:19 pace.

Beautiful, perfect day for running outside! Weather was perfect. I felt pretty good but ran about 8:30 pace. I am starting to get a little frustrated that my easy runs aren't getting faster. I don't know if this is a big deal at this point in training but I wish my easy runs were more in the 8:00 pace range. I will try to be more consistent about trying to get in this range with my next runs.

Woke up at 5:00 and did insanity and then went to the gym and did my first threshold run in my training program on the treadmill. 2 miles at 8:34 pace, 10 mins at 7:41 pace, 10 min at 7:13 pace and then finished with 2 miles at 8:34. The 10 min at 7:13 was pretty challenging for me and I had to take a few breathers. I hope to push through at these faster paces in future threshold runs. I also hope to be able to keep these paces outside and not on a treadmill. IT band is bothering me still. You had a fantastic race on Saturday. You executed a really good race plan; you were one of very few people that got stronger as the race went on. I'd love to see your mile splits if you have them.

I hope you come run Huntsville, but it seems like either race would be a good.

Rest up a bit, and let me know what you are going to do. Stick on the blog, too. There is so much good advice to be found.

From ccoop on Wed, Jun 19, 2013 at 09:46:20 from 72.13.217.134

Thanks Kam, it was so fun to get to run with you. You and Josh were great pacers. I was really amazed I was able to push stronger throughout the race I kept thinking I'd hit a wall and never really did, thankfully:) I am wondering how I'll do in a marathon, I just need to run it smart for sure. Lots of advice from you running guru's! The splits from my race were 7:23, 7:14, 7:14, 7:12, 7:02, 6:55, 6:45, 6:34, 6:39, 6:28, 6:33, 6:44, 7:12. I really am still undecided about Big Cottonwood or Huntsville because I am still worried about the last 9 miles to Cottonwood highschool. I am worried my legs will die:/ Maybe I'll get a feeling either way?

This race was seriously so fun! It was beautiful and fast:) I was so excited about my time too. So I was 4th overall in women and 2nd in my age division but they gave me a first place medal because the girl who beat me in my division took first overall. So I will take a 1st place medal any day lol! Mostly I was excited to get 6:52AP because I think I always have been a little bit afraid of dipping into 6 min miles because I didn't think I could run that fast and finish a race. But I feel like I really boosted my confidence with this race even though it was a downhill course. I felt so good this morning, I started out a little faster than planned which I was worried I would die out in the end. But I felt so good until about mile 12 and then I started feeling it, I pushed hard to the end and was mad I didn't beat 2 girls in front of me! For my first half I am proud of myself and it makes me want to keep running and racing which is what matters in the end:) I'm trying to decide if I want to run the full Big Cottonwood this September. Hard to imagine running another 13.1 miles after finishing! I also met Kam fellow fastrunningblogger and he was a pacer for 1:35 and it was fun to talk to him and run with him:) He was a great pacer!

We took the kids at 6:00 this morning (both were awake) and Cade drove me to the top of af canyon. Such a beautiful morning to get 16 miles in:( starting out my left hip was bothering me and my right heel (maybe achilles tendonitis??) i worried i wasn't going to be able to get my miles in at the very start but the pain subsided. Cade took the kids looking for elk in the canyon and luckily hadn't passed by yet. I kept trying to run and got to mile 8. When he came by I was hobbling down and he made me get in the truck. I started crying because I felt completely devastated. I have been building to this point to run in a marathon this fall and to think I might fall behind in miles or worse not be able to run one is killing me. I have been icing since I got home. If anyone reads this and has suggestions please let me know. Sad day:(

coop, sorry the run didn't pan out. It's been a week...how are you feeling? Have the pains ironed out, or are you still limping about?

I don't see a lot of clues, based on your entries from June and July. One red flag is "breaking in my new Brooks." Also, you really ran out of your head at the drop 13 half. I know how exciting it is to run a screaming fast time, but those downhill fast miles can really take a lot out of you.

As you hatch your fall racing plans, my advice is to be careful. I've seen runner after runner on this blog get fired up, and run too much, too fast, and end up INJURED.

You've got a ton of talent, desire, and heart. What you need now is patience. You strung together 4 months of 20-25 mpw, and that just isn't enough time to get your body into shape to run a marathon at the pace you are wanting to run one. I suggest planning on Ogden in May 2014. Give yourself a year to complete a buildup. It takes over 6 months for all your soft tissues, ligaments and tendons to adapt to the mileage you are contemplating. 20-25 mpw is fine for a pretty speedy half, but it's not enough for a full. You'll want to be doing more like 45-55 per week as you approach your marathon debut.

Don't do too much too soon! I'd hate to see you sidelined with a tibial stress fracture. It's the most common injury for women on this blog. Don't be the next victim!

As a new runner I also was plagued with injuries, because like you I wanted to go out and hit fast times. Kam is right, it takes time for your body to get used to the pounding. It will come, just be patient. I wasn't able to run the first marathon I signed up for because I had tendonitis in both ankles and bursitis in both hips (yeah, I looked real cool running). I ended up getting pregnant and didn't run my first marathon until my third baby was 11 months old. You are young and have plenty of time!! Call or text me if you need to talk!!

Thanks so much for the comments, I waited what seemed like a very long week and went out yesterday to try 4 miles and didn't even get to 1 mile and my IT band flared it's ugly head, I walked home and by the end of my walk my right knee was tightening up under my knee cap. I was so upset, and I am afraid there is no way I will be ready for any fall marathons with having to take time off. I agree Kam, I have been excited about doing a full since my 1/2 and have been wanting to increase my mileage to be prepared and my body just isn't handling it. I am worried I will never be able to run a marathon because what if this just keeps happening? I will try to be patient and positive. I am going to be doing some fitness training and biking to try to stay in shape but nothing feels as good as a run to me:( Carina it does help me to know you had such frustrating injuries and were able to come back and be as amazing as you are, that gives me hope to just not give up. I may try to schedule an appt with a physical therapist and see what happens there, other than that I guess I will be waiting to see how things go for another week.

A PT appointment might be instructive. My 2 cents from seeing you run at drop-13 is that there is nothing out of the ordinary with your form. I really think it's a matter of slowing down and giving your soft tissues time to adapt to the rigors of running a lot. Most training plans recommend following the 10% rule: don't increase your weekly mileage by more than 10%. Also, allow step-back weeks for your body to assimilate the added mileage. I would add to that, the 10% rule isn't hard and fast. If you are having trouble ramping up, you may need to spend 2 weeks at each mileage level.

When I started running 5 yrs ago, every single run was full blast. I started in March, and by September, ran a flat 1:37 half. But it was too much too fast too soon. I had good race times, but my body couldn't keep up with my enthusiasm. I spent October-January in the pool, running much less while my IT bands settled down. I had a weak core, which is the genesis of many running ailments. By January I was able to resume running. I started a conservative 18 week training plan, and ran Ogden.

I don't know how fast your normal training runs are, but to reduce injury risk, you should keep them 1-2 minutes slower than race pace. At the very most, I'd do 20-25% of your miles at race pace, especially when training for a marathon.

I'm going for longest comment ever here... Sorry to hijack your blog and give you a firehose of information/experience/opinion. Good luck mending!
